keepmoving

I’ve never packed running clothes before on vacation. In fact, it’s pretty darn rare that I’ve ever planned exercise on a trip. I mean, I may go take long walks on a whim….or walking is a part of the deal at a big place like Disney….but planning to get workouts in….that’s new to me.

I’m excited that I’ve planned a route (around the resort lake) – packed some running clothes, and know I want to make this a part of my week. It’s sort of a new strange ritual to me. I went from not really being active, to now wanting to plan my trip with activity that keeps me moving.

This strange new world to me…it’s becoming a habit. I get up and know it’s a day to run – and so I do it. It’s not a “do I want to” – I just know it’s on my list of things to do, and do it.

Running gear packed, boarding passes printed, and away I go. I’ll check back in after vacation and let you know how I made out!

My main plan? Keep moving….have it become the most natural thing to me….and planning ahead for vacation this time is a big step in the right direction.

Half Marathons

by admin

marathon

Half Marathons – 13.1 miles….hmmm. What would motivate you to sign up for another half marathon, when you haven’t done your first? The fear of seeing an “end”. This is what’s getting me to sign up for my next! Let me break it down a little more so it makes more sense…

1. I run my first 1/2 marathon in March 2010

2. I’m afraid when I finish in March, if I don’t have a plan, I’ll just stop moving – I’m trying to create a habit.

3. If I have a plan, and know that there’s something else I have to work towards, it will keep me motivated to continue when I finish my first 1/2 marathon.

4. I chose one in Disney (Oct 2010) – again, a place I love to visit, and will inspire me to keep going.

So..now that you saw my thought process, let me explain just a tad more.

1. I’ve got A LOT of weight to lose – and staying active is key. To develop a habit, I shouldn’t see an “END”, I should realize this activity needs to become part of my life. By setting a plan in action now – it will keep me motivated to keep one foot in front of the other and stay on my course.

2. By choosing an event I’ll be excited about – I’ll see it not only as a place to work towards, but also a reward.

Lastly, what I plan on doing is taking my time and distance that I achieve in March at the Princess Half Marathon, and work on improving it.

Ex: if I don’t finish all 13 miles of the Princess, I’ll have a distance to improve on
Ex: if I finish the Princess in a time of say 3:15:00, then I’ll know to aim for a time below that

Anyway, that’s the plan. I’ll be signing up for the Wine and Dine Half Marathon in Disney. I’m actually really happy with this plan, because in the process of doing something good for myself, I’ll have some cool, fun things to look forward to.

hydration

Nathan Speed 2 Waistpack with Two 10-Ounce Nutrition Flasks

One of the things I’ve been told is that I should train with what I plan to wear when running. That means find that plus size sports bra that isn’t going to chafe you while you run, or know how that fuel or hydration belt will feel when you’re pounding out 10 miles…you need to get used to these things, and not decide to just put them on one day for a race.

That makes sense…my problem? My size right now! I’m a plus size runner – so it can be difficult to find gear that fits me just right. After a major headache, I finally found that great sports bra, but hydration belts, well….I looked at the waist measurements and realized they weren’t meant for people my size.

I finally found this belt which fits because it has some spandex in the belt and velcro. I don’t plan on stretching it out though, and I’ll wait until I shed 2 more inches in my waist. I should be able to trim that off before my race – so hopefully I’ll start wearing the belt on my longer runs in January and February which will allow me time to get used to it.

People – fat people are trying to get into shape too, and we’re a huge overlooked market! Sell a belt extender – and you’ll make a fortune. That way I can keep using the fuel belt even when the extender is no longer needed. You’re never more aware of your size then when you’re shopping for athletic gear! Man, oh man…I’m trying here, but it’s not easy finding plus size running gear. With enough digging though, I’m finding some alternatives….

At least my sweat proof headphones were one size fits all! LOL

nimbus

I was able to swap out my running shoes, and ended up with Asics Gel Nimbus 11′s. If you’d like to see more about these shoes, click on the link and it will give you the specs over at Running Warehouse. Turns out my feet are happier in neutral shoes, as are my knees, my hips – you name it.

I’m happy I made the trek back to the store. We did learn something interesting – my walking gait is a little different than my running gait. I’m overweight, so when I’m running, my hips are a little wider apart – my thighs, and I have a wider stance — and I also stay on the outside of my foot a little longer. In fact, when I stand….just stand, my left big toe doesn’t touch the ground! LOL

Anyway, not sure what it is, but the supportive shoe they had me in before caused me aches under my knee and down the inside of my shin. After running in the neutral shoes – all pain is gone.

It defies logic they said, but hey – what works works.

What was interesting is that the guy working with me (MIKE – great guy by the way, highly recommend him at the Princeton Running Company on Nassau St) brought me to a wall that was covered with pictures of runners. He was showing me how some people, though logic would put them in one type of shoe, they did better in another. It is what it is….my feet, my body feel better in a neutral shoe over a corrective shoe.

My pain went away, and I’m a happy girl.

The other thing I did is try on both the mens and womens. I wear a women’s wide, which is about the same width as a men’s regular. The difference is in the toe box and heel, so I wanted to feel both, and opted for the men’s regular over the women’s wide. It offered me a little more leeway, and right now I need that. As I lose more weight, I may switch to the woman’s wide, but either way — these feel excellent on.

Like melted butter baby! Happy feet make for a better run, and happy knees make for a happy Deb.

Fat Girl Running

by admin

I saw a great quote – it goes on the back of your running shirt and says – if you can read this, a fat girl just passed you. ha…would be great, but what if nobody is back there? There’s another shirt over at OneMoreMileRunning.com that says -

Please God, let there be somebody behind me to read this.

Running quotes and sayings can be fun, silly, outrageous and profound. I’ve had great fun looking at all the different thoughts, sayings and quotes out there. I’m an avid reader and love to find pieces of motivation from here and there…

….and after all – I chose something that suits me more than any other. Nothing fancy, nothing profound, nothing jaw dropping — but just a simple:

Find Your Happy Pace.

…and that’s exactly what I’m in the process of doing. Finding a happy pace :)

I picked up two more running books this week. I’m looking forward to digging into them. The first is a humorous look at running etiquette called “The Runner’s Rule Book”. (there’s a longer title, but you can check the book for details…

runningbook-1

The Runner’s Rule Book: Everything a Runner Needs to Know–And Then Some

I thought this would be a fun read – so I had to add it to my library.

The next book is right up my alley. I really believe in the power of our mind. So many times we stop ourselves from doing our best because we “think” ourselves right out of it. I think the mental headgames we play with ourselves keep us from achieving our best at times — and also help us reach our incredible goals other. If you’re in the right state of mind, everything falls into place. Anyway – thought this would be a great add to my bookshelf – and it got great ratings so that just confirmed it for me.

Running Shoe Issues

November 15, 2009

I’ve got to go back this week and swap out my running shoes. I think my new shoes are “over correcting me” and giving me aches in some new places I didn’t have before. My left knee is rolling in now. It’s putting stress on it… I think I need a more neutral shoe – [...]
