Running Books

I’ve been on a reading blitz of running books again. I tend to look to them for not only inspiration but motivation. I’ve been on and off my training schedule. I get some stuff in, then I slack. When I pick up a book and start reading about running, it makes me want to move. (On the other hand, if you had EVER said I’d be buying books on running, I’d be on the ground laughing like crazy — times change, eh?)

Here are some of the latest books I’ve picked up, and with a smile I can say 4 of them are on my Kindle. Yeah for finally having more running book choices on my Kindle.

I’m currently wrapping up:

Running Until You’re 100

I like how it talks about a wide variety of topics from fat burning to nutrition, to training plans to slowing down and staying injury free. You can’t go wrong with a book from Galloway.

I also really enjoyed some fun essays about running and races in this book:

I Run, Therefore I Am–Nuts!

On my trip to the beach last week, I started to read Run Like a Mother. I like how it’s geared towards women and not only tells their journey from two people’s perspective – one competitive, one more laid back, but also laces the book with comments about how other women do things – whether it’s dealing with getting runs in to how they handle other issues.

Run Like a Mother: How to Get Moving–and Not Lose Your Family, Job, or Sanity

The next two I’ll be reading are “My Life on the Run” (Bart Yasso) and “The Runner’s Guide to the Meaning of Life” (Amby Burfoot). Clicking on any of the links or pictures will bring you to Amazon where you can check out other people’s reviews. I met Bart Yasso at the Bucks County 1/2 marathon for just a second – while he was setting up his book area. I’m looking forward to reading his adventures…

ChiRunning: A Revolutionary Approach to Effortless, Injury-Free Running

What exactly is Chi Running? It’s about taking running from a chore, and making it feel more effortless, more comfortable and well – it’s posture, it’s about using your body’s structure, and it’s about energy. It uses basic ideologies from Tai Chi and incorporates them into running.

I am still reading and learning more, but I did start playing with this concept this week. I watched a couple of videos on YouTube and I’m reading the book….

Okay – so I’m working on changing my posture just a bit – and I’ve got to honestly say, WOW! I’m a new runner as it is, so I’m still learning as I go. What was cool though, was that by simply changing my posture a little bit, it’s taken the muscle soreness out of my legs! I ran 4 miles last night (a lot for me!) and my legs aren’t sore at ALL today. It’s crazy…before a day after I ran, I’d feel it in my legs. I’m telling you, between this shift in my posture (and my beloved STICK – I use the travel size one below, perfect for me) – my legs feel nothing!

I also felt as I was running, it took less effort on my part. I’m excited to keep learning, keep reading, and work on finding my perfect position – because I think this is going to help me in the endurance and speed area down the line.

When I first got involved in running again, if you scroll back through my blog, I was buying up books left and right. This is a book I had marked to read, but forgot about for a short bit…and then I was on my favorite running forum, and somebody had mentioned this book again. It caught my attention, and I decided to pick up this book after all….man, I’m glad I did.

I TRULY think this book is going to make a big difference to my running, and how I feel not only as I run, but how I feel after I run. In only one short week – I’ve noticed differences – now they weren’t HUGE, MASSIVE, OH MY GOSH differences, but they were CERTAINLY there, and I noticed them. More notable, I don’t notice my legs today…no soreness at all!

This is something you may want to check out. If you aren’t into reading – I’m an avid reader, so I absorb this stuff, at least take a moment to check out a video or two. Cool stuff…

I picked up two more running books this week. I’m looking forward to digging into them. The first is a humorous look at running etiquette called “The Runner’s Rule Book”. (there’s a longer title, but you can check the book for details…

The Runner’s Rule Book: Everything a Runner Needs to Know–And Then Some

I thought this would be a fun read – so I had to add it to my library.

The next book is right up my alley. I really believe in the power of our mind. So many times we stop ourselves from doing our best because we “think” ourselves right out of it. I think the mental headgames we play with ourselves keep us from achieving our best at times — and also help us reach our incredible goals other. If you’re in the right state of mind, everything falls into place. Anyway – thought this would be a great add to my bookshelf – and it got great ratings so that just confirmed it for me.

The Courage To Start: A Guide To Running for Your Life

This is a fun book to read. It’s targeted at the person sitting on the sofa wondering if they could possibly take up running – and those who have just started. I found it to be an easy and refreshing read. Hey, you don’t have to go fast, you just have to get going!

Another book I’ve just finished reading is “Marathoning for Mortals”, which is the book I’m using for my training. I’ll be using the training schedule for the 1/2 in this book. It came recommended – so I picked it up, and man, what a great read. I’m really glad I’ve added this to my bookshelf.

Marathoning for Mortals

I’m currently reading this one right now. It’s hilarious and speaks to me as an out of shape woman taking on a 1/2 marathon…I ask myself many of the same questions in this book. It’s really well done and fun to read.

The Nonrunner’s Marathon Guide for Women: Get Off Your Butt and On with Your Training

Lastly, this is one of the first running books I picked up. I actually picked this one up a couple of years ago. This is the updated version – and it’s a great reference to go back through. I’ve caught myself flipping through pages of this book over and over again.
