Running Groups

I have to sit it out a few more weeks. I asked my doctor yesterday if I could start running again. She smiled softly and told me I could walk for a few weeks, but no running until after my next run of blood work (almost 3 weeks away)!!!! I’m getting so antsy and told her this. She says you can walk…I sighed, it’s not the same. She’s not a runner- she doesn’t understand that. I’m watching weeks roll by and I’m nervous once I get the go ahead, too much time will have passed and it will be harder and harder to get moving.

I’m trying to keep running in the forefront of my brain so that I’m ready to go when I get the green light. On that note, I spent today pulling together some great running links for runners looking for fun, informative, interesting running websites. Here are a bunch of running websites that you may want to check out – in no particular order.

What happens when you find yourself talking to running friends on a regular basis online – even when you’re in different states? You get together whenever you can….especially on vacation! I knew I wasn’t a natural runner and to keep myself in the right mental shape to take on running longer distances – that I needed some extra motivation. For me, that came into play when I found some running friends online.

I am surrounded by people who run 5k’s, 10k’s, 1/2 marathons and marathons on an ongoing basis. This keeps the running mindset in focus for me. Talking about running often helps me want to keep running, and inspires me to want to try harder, do more and try things I had never thought of.

- Running friends taught me how to plan races behind your next to keep you going.

- Running friends taught me how to understand what it felt like to bond with other runners doing the same thing as yourself.

- Running friends taught me how to believe in myself when I was struggling.

-Running friends taught me to keep going when I wanted to stop.

- Running friends taught me that it’s okay to be slow, just keep trying.

- Running friends taught me how to support and guide others in their running journey.

…..and running friends taught me that they talk about food and drink all the time! haaaaa — donuts, pizza, nachos, happy hours, margaritas, beer, you name it – and it’s dangerous and contagious and if you don’t keep it in check and actually eat all the things they talk about, you’ll be in trouble….thx gang!

Lastly, my special group of running friends taught me that the bond you can create while training is an incredible thing. These are just a few of my running friends….and man, oh man….do I adore each and every one of them.

I live in NJ and went looking for local running groups. I found a page that listed a ton, but I could never seem to find one local. So far the one that looked the “closest” still had me driving 45 mins to 1 hour to do the “local” runs. It was actually convenient for me this way…I had a reason not to join a group locally. Too far, wouldn’t make sense…..I’m really good at this excuse thing.

I must be searching for them for a reason, because I went looking for a “more” local running group, and accidentally came upon one. Damn! I didn’t mean to actually find one that was closer.

I found a group that actually runs 10-20 mins from here. Crap, now what? Does that mean I have to join them? I’m so not ready to join a running group, but I was actually happy to see them. What to do? What to do?

I think I’m going to put it on my list of things to do….and when I’m a little farther along, I may look into actually joining the group. I honestly don’t think I’m ready to jump into that just yet. They’re “slower” pace is still fast for me. I also am a pathetic wimp when it comes to running in the cold, and would whine and whimper in the cold and snow…no need to start off with such a pleasant manner.

I am going to put it on my calendar. I have my first “official” run/race in March – and I’m going to see how I handle this. When I come home from being part of that – I will look into, and possibly (don’t hold me to it yet, can you see me backpedaling all ready?) joining the group I found.

Okay, so they’re on my radar – and when I have built a little more confidence, and this cold weather clears up a bit…it’s on my list of “things to do” in 2010.

Looking for running groups or running forums? One running message board I want to tell you about is Running of the Ears.

rote

One of the things that is helping me in the process of training is finding support groups of other runners, and especially runners who were to be running the same race that I am. I poked around on a couple of different places, but the place that I think feels the most comfortable for me is a great supportive forum or message board called Running of the Ears.

This running message board (Running of the Ears) consists of a large group of people who take running seriously -and yet can still be silly and be themselves. Don’t mistake that for uninspiring reading….these are dedicated people who put the time and miles in and offer incredible advice to even new runners like myself.

If you’re a runner looking for a new support group — or have a love of running – especially in Disney — give Running of the Ears a shot and check it out. You’ll be glad you did.
